Board Initiative: Community-Wide Broadband

The Board of Director’s Community Broadband Initiative stems from TDPUD’s current strategic plan for 2021-2024. The plan includes four initiatives for the board to consider pursuing, including enabling community-wide broadband. This initiative was first explored by a board-appointed Broadband Committee, and then by the GM Task Force for Community Broadband, in order to garner community input to help TDPUD staff move the initiative forward.

Following a comprehensive public process, on Aug. 3, 2022, the Board awarded a contract to Uptown Services to conduct a Community-Wide Broadband Initial Scoping Study. This study provides initial estimates of market opportunity, costs and risks.

On Jan. 18, 2023, Uptown Services presented the results of the Initial Scoping Study to the Board of Directors during an educational workshop, which gave the Board and the community an opportunity to learn first-hand about Truckee’s current broadband market, customer demand, existing assets, potential business models and funding sources. The results of Uptown Services’ Community-Wide Broadband Initial Scoping Study can be found below.
